THE FRIENDS OF Y HOMEPAGE!
Greetings :O) This page is...quite simply...dedicated to the letter Y! And, No! U haven't followed a dud link to the Sesame Street site! Y is my favourite letter of the alphabet and I think it is the most underrated of all letters, while quite possibly being the most important (as I will try to show U). I heer the question - "Have U gone insane AJ??" ... the answer is no I haven't - I dont think I was ever sane in the first place. So if I have intrigued at this stage, come with me as we take a journey thorugh the wonderfullness that is...the letter Y. If U cant be bothered listen to me dribble on about the amazing qualities of a letter, thats fine! I understand...and so does Y as it is easily the most understanding and forgiving of all letters. Turn your back on your new-found friend by clicking heer. If U didn't click there then U are obviously an open-minded person wanting to know more! Pleese read on... :OD
Let us begin with some basic facts about Y then we can elaborate.
Y (wai) is the 25th letter of the modern english alphabet located between X and Z. The capital version is writen in 2 strokes, the most popular version (as illustrated by this particular font) being a half-sized V written first followed by a halfsized I below the V as the second stroke. This curious feature of the letter Y is quite intriguing as when read vertically from top to bottom these two components read VI (vai) sounding extremely similar to its pronunciation wai and indeed if U lived in Germany you would no doubt pronounce the letter AS vai. Another feature of Y is its exclusive use in mathematics as both a variable in algebra and calculus and also as the vertical axis of any 2 or 3 dimensional graph.
By far the most interesting feature of the letter Y is its flexibilty in the language. Although being one of the 21 consonants in the alphabet, Y stands alone as being the ONLY consonant that behaves as both a consonant AND a vowel. It is this fact that inspired me to make this page, and one of my goals in life is to see the letter Y take its rightful place with those 5 most socially beleeved to be the elitest of all letters, the vowels. Vowels are so exclusive in todays world that participants of certain game shows must actually buy the rights to use them as aids in helping them solve puzzles. Y is always there, offering its services for free, yet is often one of the very last chosen letters and most often picked after the contestant has solved the puzzle already. So let us now examine the curious ways that Y is integrated into words and how it is that this "consonant" seems to work so perfectly as a vowel...
Let me begin with a word...a simple word, in fact the name of a town. It is a 7 letter word but has one curious feature. (And indeed it was this word that first made me realise the amazing quailites of this letter). The word is Dynnyrn, (Pronounced Dun-ern). Now, on close examination of the word one notices that Y is clearly acting as a vowel. No other consonant could pull off this amazing feat. Sure, you could spell the word Dunnern, Dunnurn, or many other combinations of vowels in the place of Y, but could any other consonant be substituted in the place of Y?? I think not. I also place upon anybody reading this the challenge of finding a longer word that contains no vowels. 7 letters is a very substantial effort, but if anyone knows of a longer word I would be very interested to heer :O) This feature of the letter Y can also be found in simpler words we use everyday, one that springs quickly to mind is "cry" (pronounced crai) and one can see in this particular instance how special Y is. It has replaced both A and I in the word and combines them both to produce a 3 letter all-consonant word. You will notice this in many words we use everyday (such as the word "everyday"). Y is used both as a normal consonant but also as a substitute and simplifier for 1, 2 and sometimes 3 vowels at a time!!
Well, you have now reached the conclusion of my little shrine to Y. This is my first draft of this page and I will add more weird but wonderful facts about Y at a later date, (and beleeve me there is LOTS more). Hopefully it has given you new insight into this "boring and ordinary" letter, but if not, i hope it was an enjoyable waste of 10 minutes :O)
